Founded in 2017 by leading music education specialist Polly Ives, Concerteenies grew out of a desire to connect inspirational musicians with children aged 0–7 and their adults.
As Polly explains:
My whole life has been about sharing live music with others. I have been part of Sheffield’s amazing musical community since moving to the city in 1998 and through my career as a musician, educator, and music promoter, I have worked with brilliant individuals and organisations across the UK. Over the years, I’ve been involved in musical events everywhere from big concert venues, opera houses, stately homes, and cosy pubs, to car parks, farms, and even a tunnel shaft under the Thames!
Like many, my life changed when I had my first baby. It was hard to experience live music with a newborn, but I really wanted my child to hear music up close and for us to explore new opportunities as a family. I joined lots of fantastic children’s music groups and, through them, shared musical experiences, made friends, and received much-needed parenting support.
All of this got me thinking about how I could bring together more professional musicians with young children and their adults. It wasn’t long before I started to trial daytime concerts with friends and, as you can probably guess, they were a success. Before I knew it, Concerteenies was formed!
From the outset Concerteenies had a clear ethos, and that remains to this day. All our events are designed to be as enjoyable and appealing to adults as children. There are sensory elements to engage the younger attendees and a super relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere for the adults. We never want anyone to feel worried about needing to breastfeed or change nappies during a concert or if their baby cries or if parents are feeling particularly sleep deprived! It’s all is about a shared and informal musical experience.
The first series took place in the Backroom at The Greystones pub, the 2019 Guardian Best Live Music Pub in the UK no less! Since then, we have presented concerts in music venues, cultural spaces, nurseries, schools, care homes and community hubs in Sheffield and further afield. We have also established collaborations and partnerships with artists, venues, groups, and organisations across the North and have a wonderful team of event assistants.
There is no doubt the last year has been really challenging but, despite having hardly any live events, together with Hannah Jones (Projects Manager), we have transformed the vision of our work, made new connections and commissioned new music. We now incorporate a wider range of musical styles and activity, and engage people who wouldn’t normally access our events.
We believe music is vitally important for young children and their adults, and are more determined than ever to bring generations together. Along with our wonderful musicians, assistants, partner organisations, and venues, we are looking forward to bringing creative and engaging musical events to ever more people and places.
