Concerteenies: Loops - Juliana Day and Manon McCoy

  • Site Gallery 1 Brown Street Sheffield, England, S1 2BS United Kingdom (map)

Join Concerteenies for a musical morning with your 0-7 year olds, celebrating how technology can influence and inspire music-making! These are relaxed and family-friendly concerts in collaboration with Site Gallery as part of the Society of Explorers’ exhibition Cyber Cafe, with informal introductions, percussion, props, bubbles and more!

Juliana Day is a recorder player, whistle player and vocalist based in Sheffield, UK. She has performed for TV, theatre, opera and radio including for the BBC, Disney+, The Royal Shakespeare Company, Manchester Collective and Northern Silents. She co-directs Emergence Collective, an improvised minimalist ensemble, featuring a revolving line-up of around 30 musicians. They regularly perform and have sold out venues around the UK. They have just released their second album which was featured in Loud & Quiet magazine and Quietus' Music of the Month among other publications.

Manon McCoy is a Sheffield-based composer and harpist. Her work explores themes that arise from her own lived experiences such as body, gender, and phenomenological perceptions of time and space. She is particularly interested in the creation of spaces both musical and physical, often designing pieces that rework the performer-audience dynamic. Her writing draws on elements from her training in Western Classical and Contemporary Art Music, British Folk and Indian Classical music, bringing with it a strong sense of storytelling and sharing of space.

Cyber Cafe takes inspiration from the first internet cafes that acted as a site for optimism and excitement at the early potential of the internet. These spaces offered new possibilities for connection, collaboration and creative self expression. Site Gallery’s young people’s collective the Society of Explorers have collaborated with artists Antonio Roberts and Lucy Cheesman over a series of workshops, experimenting with open-source platforms and old technologies. Together they have designed an interactive exhibition reimagining the creative potential of the internet cafe of today.
